INDESIGN - Master Pages - Running Headers

If you want the running header at the top of your pages to change with every chapter, then this is the procedure to follow.
It's slightly trickier than the preceding two, but when you have done it a couple of times you will get the hang of it.

1 Double Click on A Master in the Pages Panel

2 Draw a text box at the top of the right hand page

3 Go Type > Text Variables > Insert Variable > Running Header

4 Go to Object > Text Frame Options

5 Set Vertical Adjustment - Align to Centre

Now in the Pages Panel click on the page where the title of the first chapter will appear.

1 Draw a Text Frame and type in the title of the chapter.

2 Click on the Flyout Menu at the top right of the Paragraph Style panel

3 Click New Paragraph Style

4 Call it Chapter Header

5 Click OK

6 Make sure Chapter Header style is applied to the title of the chapter

7 Go to Type > Text variables > Define

8 Double Click on Running Header

9 Set Style to Chapter Header

10 Set Use to First on Page

11 Click OK

The running header on each right hand page will now be the title of your chapter.
Don't forget when you start the next chapter, to apply Chapter Header style to the chapter title, to ensure the Running Header changes.
